Lady Bears come out on top with a 62-45 over the Lady Apaches & Arcadia pounds Burroughs 87-51 in boys contest


The John Burroughs Bears basketball teams settled for a split of their Wednesday night doubleheader with the Arcadia Apaches as the Lady Bears extended their win streak to seven games and the boys dropped their contest decisively. The Lady Bears left no doubt in their 62-45 victory, while The Bears were pounded by the Apaches 87-51. Valentina Morales recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Lady Bears and Justin Herrera scored 24 points in the loss for Burroughs. Owen Edwards led Arcadia with 23 points in the boys contest and Maddie Tran had 14 points for the Apaches.



The girls game between Arcadia and Burroughs began the night. The Lady Bears entered this one following a narrow 53-49 win in overtime over Tracy in the Santa Monica Showcase last Friday and the Lady Apaches went 2-0 at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas over the winter break.



The Lady Bears turned on the jets offensively to begin the first quarter as Jessica Mena, Isabella Amayakyan and Grace Barton contributed to an 8-2 scoring run to start. Catelyn Chen closed the gap with a three point basket to make it an 8-5 game. Valentina Morales responded with a two-point basket to get the lead back up to five and Isabella Amayakyan added a two-point jump shot. Nikki Tran got the Lady Apaches back in it with two points of her own to help keep pace with the Lady Bears. Burroughs, however, extended their lead and held a 16-7 advantage heading into the second quarter.



Misaki O’Donnell nailed both of her foul shots at the line to start quarter two. Morales and Tran then traded points with their two-point baskets, with Burroughs still in control with an 18-11 lead. Morales extended the lead with consecutive bank shot two’s and Barton followed with a three to continue to push the lead. Barton also nailed a three-point basket at the buzzer to give the Lady Bears a 37-15 lead at the half.



Following the halftime break, Misaki O’Donnell and Izzy Amaroso immediately traded layups for their respective teams. Amayakyan and Amaroso then scored consecutive layups to increase the lead to 26 for Burroughs. The Lady Bears went on cruise control throughout the second half to complete the 17 point win over The Lady Apaches.



Burroughs improves to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in Pacific League play and Arcadia drops to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in Pacific League play which puts both teams tied for second place in the standings. Both teams will return to action on Friday, January 9th as the Lady Bears will host the Glendale Lady Nitros and the Lady Apaches will return home to host the Lady Muir Mustangs. Both games will take place at 5:15 p.m.


The boys game between the Burroughs Bears and Arcadia Apaches concluded the night in primetime. Arcadia came off a 1-3 record at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona and Burroughs came off a 54-39 win over Castaic last Friday.


Ethan Cooper and Owen Edwards traded buckets for their respective teams to start the first quarter. Ajani Balogun then scored a tip in to put the Apaches up by one. Owen Edwards increased the Arcadia lead to three with a layup. Teagen Bradford responded and tied the game at 6-6 with a three-point basket, but Balogun put the Apaches back in front 8-6 with a slam dunk. Will Rowan then gave Burroughs a two-point lead with back-to-back baskets. Both teams battled it out throughout the opening quarter with Arcadia entering the second quarter with a 21-15 lead.


Tyler West began the second quarter with a layup to get the Apache lead up to eight and then Justin Herrera nailed a three to cut the lead to five. West and Alex Mazakian then combined on consecutive possessions to extend the Arcadia lead to 27-18. Herrera hit another three pointer to keep pace with a star studded Apaches squad. However, Arcadia controlled momentum throughout the quarter, and headed into intermission with a 12-point lead over Burroughs.


Balogun, Herrera, and Edwards all scored for their respective teams to begin the third quarter, with Arcadia leading comfortably 44-30. Herrera then converted a big three-point shot to cut the lead to 11 points. Arcadia eventually took control of the second half in the fourth quarter and completed the 36-point win over Burroughs.


With the loss, Burroughs drops to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in Pacific League play and Arcadia improves to 14-5 overall and 4-0 in Pacific League play. The Apaches are now tied for first place in the standings following Crescenta Valley’s 75-59 win over Muir. Both teams will return to action on Friday, January 9th with Burroughs hosting Glendale and Arcadia will host Muir. Both games will take place at 6:45 p.m.
