Eden Wynne scores the go ahead two point basket with 6.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter


The John Burroughs Bears suffered a heartbreaking 42-41 loss on Saturday to the Bishop Diego Cardinals in the CIF Southern Section D5 girls basketball championship.


Eden Wynne scored the go-ahead two point basket with 6.8 seconds left in regulation, and Grace Barton missed a game-tying free throw attempt to give the Cardinals the win..


Both teams came off semifinal wins on Saturday February 21. Burroughs defeated Oakwood 44-35 and Bishop Diego won 48-42 over Godinez Fundamental.


The Lady Bears started off the game fast with a 4-0 lead. Jessica Mena and Isabella Amayakyan both jumpstarted the offense for Burroughs.



Wynne got the Cardinals on the board with a layup with Burroughs still in control with a 4-2 lead.



Luz Castro then nailed a three-point basket to give Bishop Diego a one point lead. It was an entertaining first quarter for the fans with Burroughs leading by two at the end of one quarter.


Amayakyan began the second quarter with a layup to put Burroughs up by four and the Bears defense forced a five second violation to get the ball back. Mena recorded a layup to put the Bears up by six.


Bishop Diego came back from being down 18-12 to making it a one score game at the halftime break as Jeisa Coronado nailed a three to end the first half. Amayakyan had six points for Burroughs and Luz Castro had five points for Bishop Diego in the first half.


Mena began the third quarter with a layup to put the Lady Bears up 20-17 and Castro responded with a basket of her own to keep the one-point deficit. Wynne and Jaymi Coronado made back-to-back three-point baskets to give the Cardinals a five point lead.



The Lady Bears came right back with consecutive points with Amayakyan making both of her foul shots and Barton tying the game at 25-25 with a big three-point basket.



Both teams played neck and neck throughout the third quarter and Wynne made a layup at the buzzer to send the teams into the fourth quarter. Burroughs held a one-point lead, 34-33 heading into the final quarter.


Castro began the fourth quarter by going one for two at the foul line to tie the game at 34. Wynne and Coronado added back-to-back baskets to give the Cardinals a lead at 38-34. Coronado then went one for two at the foul line to increase the lead to five for Bishop Diego.


The Bears responded to the Cardinals push and went on a 6-0 run with points by Valentina Morales and Amayakyan. Amayakyan scored consecutive layups to put Burroughs up 40-39.


Castro then tied the game at 40 by going one for two at the foul line. Wynne scored the go-ahead basket with 6.8 seconds left in regulation, prompting a timeout call by Burroughs.


Following the timeout Barton was fouled with 0.6 seconds left in the game. She made the first free throw and Bishop Diego called a timeout.



Following the Cardinals timeout Barton had one more chance to force overtime at the foul line but she missed the second free throw and Bishop Diego escaped with a one-point victory. Amayakyan led Burroughs with 19 points and Wynne led Bishop Diego with 16 points.


Both Burroughs and Bishop Diego will participate in the State Playoffs. Burroughs will take on Murrieta Valley at Murrieta Valley High School and Bishop Diego will travel to Carlsbad in the opening round of the girls basketball division three state playoffs. Those contests will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3rd.
