Tatum McPhee’s go-ahead two-run double in the top of the fifth inning propelled the Coyotes to a dominant victor over the Bulldogs

The Burbank Bulldogs suffered a blowout 9-2 loss to the Castaic Coyotes behind Tatum McPhee’s go-ahead two-run double in the top of the fifth inning which flipped the script in Castaic’s favor.

Last week, Burbank fell 1-0 to Providence on Tuesday afternoon and Castaic suffered a 8-6 loss to Santa Paula on Friday afternoon.

Addison Lombardo worked around traffic to start the game as she left two on base by getting Emma French on a ground out to shortstop Cassie Sanchez and freezing Romaya Crawford looking for a strikeout.

The Bulldogs got off to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Holly Cashman driving home Kassie Kimmer with an RBI double. Sanchez then reached first base on an error charged to Samantha Farrell, which brought home Chloe Updike for the game’s second run.

Following Isabell Villigran reaching first base on a fielder’s choice Heather Neilson struck out looking to end the first inning.

Lombardo went back to work in the second inning, recording a one-two-three inning, before helping her cause with the bat. Lombardo then recorded a one-out single in the bottom of the second inning to load the bases.

Chloe Updike and Holly Cashman had a chance to break this game open but failed to capitalize. Updike struck out swinging and Cashman grounded out to shortstop Charlotte Wheeler to end the inning. Lombardo pitched four no-hit innings until the Coyotes changed the game in the top of the fifth inning.

Hailey Parks got Castaic on the board by scoring on a throwing error charged to Kimmer. Samantha Farrell drove home Riley Sitler on an RBI groundout to the second baseman Alyssa Perez to tie the game at two.

McPhee then broke up Lombardo’s no-hitter by recording a two-run RBI double to put Castaic up 4-2. Lombardo finally got out of the top of the fifth inning by getting French on a groundout to Perez.

The Coyotes continued to have control in the later stages in the game and eventually completed the seven-run win over Burbank. “It was a quality loss but the girls played great,” said Javier Rojas.

“Addison Lombardo pitched four scoreless innings and is already making a big impact on the team as a young freshman.”

Rojas added that Lombardo also proved that she is gonna be a core piece to the Bulldogs for many years to come, especially on the pitching side.

“This game was not a loss in my book because this team battled through the entire game, our offense had its moments but our fielding has looked awesome as of late.” said Kassie Kimmer. Kimmer added that Lombardo pitched an amazing game and did a great job with hitting her spots in the strike zone.

Burbank drops to 0-3 and Castaic improves to 3-1 on the season. The Bulldogs will return to action Tuesday, March 3 for another home game in the second of the back-to-back with Maranatha with first pitch scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Castaic will take on Chatsworth on Friday, March 6 at 3:30 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
