Bears sixth run bottom of the first inning propelled them to a sweeping victory over the Bulldogs

On Teacher Appreciation Night, the John Burroughs Bears completed the two-game sweep of the Pasadena Bulldogs with a 10-3 victory, fueled by a six-run first inning highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Jake Rauenswider. 

Burroughs took the first game of the series 12-0 over Pasadena at Pasadena High School on Tuesday afternoon. 

Prior to the game, Burroughs athletic director, head girls flag football coach and the head of the physical education department Keith Knoop threw out the ceremonial first pitch to catcher Jack Smith. 

Kayson Montgomery worked around traffic in the first inning following a leadoff single by Dylan Derosier. First, he got Reese Kim to ground out to second baseman Logan Drossin. 

Derosier was out trying to advance to third base to complete the double play. Montgomery allowed a  two-out single to Max Reynolds, but forced Aaron Martinez to ground out to the shortstop Elliot Ross to end the top of the first inning. 

The Bears began the bottom of the first inning by loading the bases. It started with an opposite field double by Elliot Ross. Slater Mersola and Devin Whittekiend reached base via the walk.

Jack Smith drove home Ross for the game’s first run with an RBI single. Rauwensider drove home three more runs with a bases clearing triple to make it a 4-0 game. 

Burroughs added two more runs in the bottom of the first with an RBI sacrifice fly by Thomas Martin to score Rauwensider from third to make it a 5-0 lead.

Montgomery recorded a two-out double to keep the pressure on before moving to third base on a passed ball from. 

Montgomery scored from third base on a wild pitch by Derosier to make it a 6-0 game. Logan Drossin produced another two-out base hit  with a triple.

Elliott Ross had a chance to get his second hit in the inning, but ended up grounding out to first baseman Jayden Mendoza to end the home half of the first inning. 

Harrison Gwaltney began the top of the second inning with a leadoff single. He moved from second to third base on a wild pitch by Montgomery.

Montgomery recovered and struck out Bruno Pierrandozzi and Ryan Chen following Gwaltney’s single. 

Jackson Bradley drove in the game’s first run for the Bulldogs with a two-out RBI single to score Gwantley from third.

Montgomery then got Jayden Mendoza to ground out to first baseman Devin Whittekiend to end the second inning. 

Dylan Derosier’s night on the mound was done after one inning, as he was replaced by Reese Kim to start the bottom of the second inning. Derosier remained in the game at shortstop. Kim retired the side in order to end the second inning. 

Pasadena added two more runs in the top of the third inning with back-to-back two-out RBI’s from Aaron Martinez and Harrison Gwaltney as the Bulldogs made it a three-run game. Montgomery then struck out Bruno Pierandozzi looking to end the top of the third. 

The Bears were also held scoreless in the third and fourth innings but added more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith and Rauwensider got on base to start the home half of the fifth inning. Smith was hit by a pitch by Kim and Rauwensider reached on a walk. 

Thomas Martin laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached second base on an error from Kim. Smith and Rauwensider scored to make it an 8-3 game. 

Zach Guevara laid down another sacrifice bunt to move Martin to third base. Montgomery drove home Martin with a two-out RBI single to increase the Bears lead to six. 

Montgomery continued to work on the mound, recording the first two outs in the top of the sixth inning. He induced back-to-back groundouts to shortstop Elliot Ross from Aaron Martinez and Harrison Gwaltney. Montgomery was replaced by Jack Guest after allowing a two-out opposite field single to Pierandozzi.

Guest began his outing by allowing back-to-back two out walks to Ryan Chen and Jackson Bradley to load the bases. He got out of the bases loaded jam with a flyout to the left fielder Zach Guevara to end the top of the sixth inning. 

The Bears added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Rauwensider drove home Slater Mersola with a two-out RBI double to make it a 10-3 game. Thomas Martin had a chance to provide more runs but was robbed of a base hit by second baseman Andre Garcia to end the sixth inning. 

Guest worked around a one-out walk allowed to Reese Kim when he struck out Max Reynolds and Aaron Martinez to end the game. Burroughs improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play and Pasadena falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, March 10th. Burroughs will begin a two-game series with the Glendale Nitros at home with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. Pasadena will begin their two-game series with the Burbank Bulldogs at Burbank High School. Round one of the battle of the Bulldogs showdown will take place at 3:45 p.m.
